AMSN members are the strength of our association. Your time, talent, and expertise guide the organization and advance the specialty of medical-surgical nursing. When we have openings on our current volunteer units or new ones are being formed, a Call for Volunteers will emailed to members and shown below.

Scholarship & Awards Committee

AMSN is currently looking for volunteers for the Scholarship & Awards Committee. The Committee reviews and scores several awards, grants, and scholarships throughout the year, including:

  • Annual Convention Grant
  • CMSRN Certification and Certification Renewal Grants
  • Clinical Practice Award
  • Clinical Leadership Award
  • Emergency Needs Grant
  • Higher Education Scholarship
  • Nurse in Washington Internship Grant

In 2020 we will also be working on developing new rubrics for all existing awards, grants and scholarships.

Eligibility:

  • These positions require a time commitment of two to four hours a month
  • Volunteer terms are one or three years in length with an option to renew at the end of the term
  • Committee members must be AMSN members for at least the past year
  • CMSRN is preferred
  • If chosen to volunteer, you will not be able to apply or assist another person with applying for any AMSN award, grant, or scholarship during your term of service

Application period will be open August 1 through September or until all positions are filled. Selection is expected to take place in October and orientation for new members in November 2020.

Behavioral Health Program Volunteers

AMSN's Behavioral Health Program (BH) is a valuable educational resource for medical-surgical nurses across all practice settings focusing on the care and communication needs of patients who have mental health issues.

AMSN, in partnership with MSNCB, is in the process of making BH into an assessment-based certificate program and are in need of volunteers to make this happen!

We're looking for 20-25 volunteers to participate in one of three volunteer groups. Meetings will take place virtually and you can participate in more than one group.

See below for more information about each volunteer group including an estimated date when the meeting will take place and the time commitment needed to complete each project.

Qualifications for all Volunteer Groups:

  • Practicing RN
  • Full member of AMSN for at least 2 years
  • BSN or higher degree
  • Personal device with webcam required
  • Able to meet project completion timeline

Content Item Writers & Test Form Review

Volunteers will be charged with writing 100 questions in total for all BH modules.  Experts will provide training and guidance during the entire item writing process. After writers build the questions, a smaller group of these individuals are needed to review the test form prior to beta testing. A 1-2-hour follow-up virtual call will take place 2-4 weeks after the item writer meeting to review the beta test form.

Volunteers Needed:

10-12 people

Where:

2-day virtual meeting. Personal device with webcam and Microsoft Excel required.

When:

Item Writing in August/September Dates TBD. Form Review 1-2 hours September. A Doodle poll will be sent to determine availability.

Item Analysis

After beta testing is completed, this group will reconvene to analyze each question and its performance during beta testing. Experts will provide training and guidance during the entire process.

Volunteers Needed:

3-5 people

Where:

2 Virtual Meetings

When:

Item Analysis 3-5 hours late September, early October.  A Doodle poll will be sent to determine availability for the final virtual meeting dates.

Standard Setting & Cut Score

The final step to the entire process is setting a passing score for the BH certificate. Experts will provide training and guidance during the entire process.
