One of each of the awards for individuals may be presented each year, provided there is a nominee meeting the award criteria. Presentation takes place during the AMSN Annual Convention.

Clinical Practice Award

The Clinical Practice Award recognizes an AMSN member for outstanding professional achievements and contributions as a medical-surgical registered nurse who demonstrates a high level of skill in the direct care of medical-surgical patients and has improved the image and clinical practice of med-surg nursing.

Leisa A. Kelly, MS, APRN-CNS, CMSRN, CEN
Leisa A. Kelly, MS, APRN-CNS, CMSRN, CEN

Leisa Kelly is an advance practice RN in the role of CNS at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Louisiana. She has used the foundation of the CNS role and her clinical expertise, to directly impact patient outcomes in the med-surg arena.

Leisa has focused on the patient/client sphere of influence by remaining centered on the patient/family, staying abreast of current research, utilizing resources wisely and never losing sight of the fact that one person can make a difference. As a clinician, Leisa was integral is assisting to obtain its Nurses Improving Care for Health system Elders (NICHE) designation with the focus on the medical-surgical division. She is a known leader in her institution, and her leadership is evident in her daily practice.

The Clinical Leadership Award recognizes an AMSN member for outstanding professional achievement and leadership within the medical-surgical clinical setting whose leadership qualities emulate the highest of professional standards and has improved the image and practice of medical-surgical nursing. The leader demonstrates exceptional compassion and commitment to patients, colleagues, and the profession of medical-surgical nursing.

Kelley Doss Cartwright, MSN, RN, CNL, CMSRN, CCAP
Kelley Doss Cartwright, MSN, RN, CNL, CMSRN, CCAP

Kelley Doss Cartwright has a heart for Evidence Based Practice and Research and recently completed and presented an EBP project at the AMSN Annual Convention. She is an active participant in an ongoing IRB approved study utilizing a new IV pole called the IVEA to increase patient mobility, subsequently reducing negative patient outcomes.

Kelley works on streamlining patient discharges, has increased CMSRN certifications from 5 to 35 in two years, and has been acknowledged at the system level for recognizing multiple near misses and good catches. In the words of a colleague, “She has literally wiped the tears from my eyes when I felt like I could no longer do it, she has helped me find the confidence I need to be the best nurse I can. Kelley plays a vital role in the outcomes our unit has had.”

Kelley clearly goes above and beyond to help others achieve their goals and more! A job well done, indeed!

The CMSRN of Distinction Award recognizes a Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) who exemplifies the mission, vision and core values of MSNCB. It acknowledges a CMSRN who is dedicated to promoting and communicating the value of certification by providing education and support to peers, healthcare organizations, patients and/or the community.

2019 Recipient of the CMSRN of Distinction Award

Mimi Haskins, DNP, RN, CNS, CMSRN
Mimi Haskins, DNP, RN, CNS, CMSRN

Dr. Haskins is a Corporate Nurse Educator with Catholic Health in Buffalo, NY, and has been a med-surg nurse for 34 years. She received her BSN from D’Youville College, her Master of Science and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University at Buffalo School of Nursing.

Prior to her current position at Catholic Health, Mimi worked as a bedside medical-surgical nurse; has taught in the undergraduate program at University at Buffalo School of Nursing; and was in staff development at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. She retired in 2005, as a Major, from the Army Nurse Corps, after serving 27 years of both active and reserve duty.

Mimi was a member of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) for nine years serving as a Director, Treasurer, and President.

Her research interests include specialty certification for nurses and its impact on patient outcomes. She led a national research study for MSNCB on the perceived value of specialty certification, then published and presented the results in 2011. She has also co-authored publications related to interprofessional education of nursing students and the establishment of dedicated education units in a comprehensive cancer care center.

In her current role, Mimi has been instrumental in promoting medical-surgical certification for the staff nurses, not only within her facility, but for all facilities within the Catholic Health system. She has developed and taught a medical-surgical nursing certification review class and has established a medical-surgical certification review resource library within her healthcare facility.

Anthony J. Jannetti Award for Extraordinary Contributions to Health Care

This is the most prestigious award presented by AMSN. "The Tony Award," as it is affectionately called, was established in 1996 in honor of Anthony J. Jannetti in recognition of the support Tony has provided to the profession of nursing and to the formation of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses. This award recognizes the extraordinary contributions of a nurse who has made a significant impact on nursing practice and towards the enhancement of health care in general.

2019 Recipient of the "Tony" Award

Linda Burnes-Bolton, DrPH, RN, FAAN

Dr. Linda Burnes-Bolton is Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Chief Health Equity Officer and the inaugural holder of the James R. Klinenberg, MD, and Lynne Klinenberg-Linkin Chair in Nursing. She joined Cedars-Sinai in 1971 and was named vice president of nursing in 1991.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Burnes-Bolton has impacted healthcare policy, clinical practice, and patient care nationally while elevating the role and enhancing the professional training of nurses.

She previously she served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive for Cedars-Sinai in addition to her national leadership activities, which include serving as president of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the National Black Nurses Association, and the American Academy of Nursing.

She is a trustee of Case Western Reserve University and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Burnes-Bolton has received numerous honors over the years. Most notably, she was named a living legend by the American Academy of Nursing in 2016 and received the 2016 TRUST Award from the American Hospital Association for visionary leadership in healthcare.

She has received lifetime achievement awards from the National Black Nurses Association and the American Organization of Nurse Executives. In 2011, Modern Healthcare magazine named her one of the top 25 women in healthcare. Her accomplishments are so awe-inspiring – as is she.

This award is in recognition of extraordinary service to AMSN. AMSN presidents dedicate much time, energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the benefit of the association, therefore, this award is name in their honor. Likewise, volunteers dedicate their time and talents to the benefit of AMSN. This award is in recognition of a member who consistently volunteers their time and has made significant outstanding contributions in assisting AMSN achieve its strategic goals.

2019 Recipient of the AMSN Presidents’ Award

Dottie Roberts, EdD, MSN, MACI, RN, OCNS-C, CMSRN Lexington, SC
Dottie Roberts, EdD, MSN, MACI, RN, OCNS-C, CMSRN

Dr. Dottie Roberts has been a member of AMSN since 1992, making her a charter member. She is certified as a CMSRN, an orthopedic clinical nurse specialist, and a nurse educator.

Over the many years that she has served AMSN, Dottie has been a reviewer for the MEDSURG Nursing Journal, and the clinical nurse specialist competencies task force and she has served as a faculty member for the on-the-road certification course. She also served as a member of the 2008 Position Statement Task Force and she was the editor of the CMSRN Review Questions 3rd edition.

Furthermore, she has published book chapters to assist medical-surgical nurses and students learn about the assessment and management of a variety of clinical problems. Dottie has also authored the chapter in the Core Curriculum regarding the musculoskeletal system. Over the last two decades she has provided numerous outstanding presentations at AMSN conventions regarding tips for writing for publication.

Since 2003, she has served as the Editor for the MEDSURG Nursing Journal, adding her expertise to elevate the quality of papers published for our members. In addition, she has helped countless novice authors revise their manuscripts to obtain their first publication.
