Volunteer Units

The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is a vibrant community of medical-surgical nurses who care about:

  • Improving patient care,
  • Developing personally & professionally,
  • Advocating for the specialty of medical-surgical nursing,
  • Connecting with other nurses who share their compassion & commitment.

Serving as a volunteer helps you grow from a rewarding and educational experience. Volunteers are the means by which AMSN achieves its goals.

Types of Volunteer Units

In addition to the Board of Directors, AMSN has many volunteer units to accomplish the strategic plan and goals of the organization. There are those with regular ongoing responsibilities: standing committees, coordinators and representatives.

AMSN also forms task forces as needed to accomplish special projects. A chair and members are selected for the duration of the project and disbanded once it is complete.

Becoming Part of a Volunteer Unit

The majority of volunteers are selected through a “Call for Volunteers” that is emailed to all AMSN members. The Call outlines the specific responsibilities of the position, time commitment, and eligibility criteria. Candidates for volunteer units with multiple members are usually selected based on the need for geographic, practice and educational diversity.
