The C-2 Orthopedic Unit  at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has received the prestigious AMSN PRISM Award®, an honor recognizing exceptional nursing practice, leadership, and outcomes in hospital medical-surgical units.

The award, which stands for “Premier Recognition In the Specialty of Med-Surg,” is the first of its kind honoring med-surg nursing units in the United States. It is co-sponsored by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB). The award is given to outstanding acute care/med-surg units or adult/pediatric units classified as med-surg.

“It is truly an honor to be given the award and designated as a PRISM unit. We are deeply humbled to be the first international recipient of the award outside of the United States.”

AMSN President Linda Yoder and MSNCB President Antoinette Falker presented the C-2 Orthopedic Unit with the AMSN PRISM Award plaque using a video stream during a ceremony November 6, 2017, at the Post Graduate Auditorium, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The achievement of this award by C-2 Orthopedic Unit will also be announced on the AMSN and MSNCB websites, on social media sites, and in AMSN and MSNCB publications.

“In C-2, we find many ways to celebrate and honor colleagues in regard to their achievements and specialty practices and also, it gives us time to acknowledge the contributions that nurses make every day to patient and health care to the community,” Woodhouse said. “We recognize the compassionate, life-changing contributions nurses make to individuals, families and communities. We honor our nurses' daily commitment to deliver patient-centered care, improve patient outcomes, and further their professional development. Hoping to inspire nurses to strive for the highest levels of patient safety and quality, AMSN and MSNCB launched the award in October 2012. The award also reflects the compassion, commitment, and connection that characterize med-surg nurses.
