Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI)

Purpose

The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) provides an opportunity for a member of AMSN to attend NIWI each year. AMSN awards one (1) grant to cover the cost of registration for NIWI plus hotel expenses throughout the event. For complete information about the NIWI program, visit The Alliance.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a member of AMSN for one (1) year by application date.
  • The recipient will be expected to share how this award has advanced his/her professional practice.
  • Current members of the Board of Directors of AMSN, current members of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board, members of the Scholarship & Awards Committee, and AMSN staff are not eligible to apply for the NIWI Grant.
  • The NIWI Grant may not be won in consecutive years.

Deadline

Applications must be received in the AMSN National Office by October 31 of each year, and applicants are notified December 5-15. Submissions received after the application deadline will not be considered.

About the NIWI program

Are you interested in how you, as a nurse, can be involved in the legislative process? You can be a voice for nursing and assist others in becoming involved in this important process.

The Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) program is held for three days in February, March, or April of each year in Washington, DC., and sponsored by The Nursing Organizations Alliance (The Alliance).Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI)

NIWI is open to any RN or nursing student interested in learning more about the legislative process. There is no application or acceptance process to attend NIWI. You simply register.

The objectives of the internship are to:

  • Describe how nurses can be involved and influence policy at the local and national level
  • Discuss how to work effectively with legislative staff to advance policy agendas
  • Describe key steps to effect change in the legislative process
  • Identify techniques to advance legislative issues at the grassroots level
  • Identify legislative, political, and economic forces driving health care policy and delivery changes today
  • Learn to schedule Capitol Hill meetings
