Position Statements

Position statements are an important part of the overall agenda of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN). AMSN has defined position statements that are directed at achieving the mission, vision and strategic plan of the association. They can be used by medical-surgical nurses in all practice settings.

AMSN agrees with the American Nurses Association (ANA).

AMSN agrees with the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) position statement titled Holding, Crowding, and Patient Flow.

Medication Errors

AMSN recommends nurses refer to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for information and resources on Patient Safety & Medical Errors.

Nurses’ Bill of Rights

AMSN agrees with the American Nurses Association (ANA) Nurses Bill of Rights.

Pain Management

AMSN agrees with the position statements of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) and the American Society of Pain Management Nurses (ASPMN) as follows:
