IT IS THE POSITION OF AMSN THAT:

  • The Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Exam reflects the evidenced based and holistic practice of the medical-surgical nurse which results in desired patient outcomes.
  • The Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Exam validates the expertise and knowledge of the medical-surgical nurse and promotes medical-surgical nursing as a specialty.
  • Continued education opportunities offered by AMSN will assist the medical-surgical nurse in becoming recertified every 5 years.
  • Health care facilities should promote certification as part of the medical-surgical nurse's career development plan.
  • Research will demonstrate that the certified medical-surgical nurse excels in standards of practice and improved patient outcomes.

OVERVIEW:

AMSN initiated the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) as an autonomous affiliate for the coordination of a certification examination in medical-surgical nursing (CMSRN® credential) to validate knowledge in the specialty. The CMSRN examination is accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS).

RATIONALE:

AMSN supports certification as a commitment to safe, evidence-based, holistic care which results in desired patient outcomes.

DEFINITION:

Certification: the formal recognition of the specialized knowledge, skills, and experience demonstrated by the achievement of standards identified by a nursing specialty to promote optimal health outcomes (ABNS, 2006)
