Participate in Leadership Development and Research

Greetings Medical-Surgical Nurses!

Clinical Leadership Development for Frontline Medical-Surgical Nurses.

My name is Dr. Terry Jones and I would like to invite you to participate in this nursing research study.

As you may know, the Future of Nursing Report published by the Institute of Medicine calls for all nurses to develop and practice leadership skills. Despite this national call to action, surprisingly little is known about the actual leadership practices and competencies of medical surgical nurses.

Similarly, little is known about which teaching strategies are most effective in developing leadership skills. Without this knowledge, it is difficult to develop effective educational programs to support leadership development among medical surgical nurses.

The Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses (AMSN) has developed a self-paced online learning program to help medical surgical nurses develop clinical leadership skills.

This program is called the Clinical Leadership Program (CLDP) and is commercially available for purchase. The CLDP consists of a set of 10 online modules that cover a variety of topics related to clinical leadership. I am interested in how effective this program is in helping medical surgical nurses develop better leadership skills.

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the CLDP, I would like to compare the leadership practices of medical surgical nurses before and after completing the 10 CLDP modules. Therefore, I have put together a survey to collect information from practicing medical surgical nurses about their perceived leadership practices and educational needs. RNs practicing in direct care roles (staff nurse) on inpatient medical-surgical nursing units are needed to help evaluate the CLDP.

Participation involves completing a baseline survey about leadership practices, completing the 10 CLDP modules, completing the survey immediately after finishing the CLDP, and completing the survey again at 6, 12, and 18 months after the CLDP.

Each module takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete and the entire program is accredited for over 14 contact hours by AMSN and Anthony J. Jannetti. It is expected that completion of the survey (including a few demographic questions) will take about 20-25 minutes.

Surveys must be completed online and all responses will remain confidential. In addition, you will be asked to provide the name and contact information of one peer and one direct supervisor who have had the opportunity to observe your behavior at work. These individuals will be contacted and asked to complete a short online survey about the frequency of leadership behaviors observed. Their responses will not be shared.

If you are interested in learning more about this study and becoming a participant, please visit the survey.

Participants will be given free access to the 10 CLDP modules and will receive a gift certificate for Amazon following completion of each CLDP module.

Thank you for your interest in and support of this study!

Sincerely,
