Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Announces New Award for Nursing Units at Convention

Pitman, NJ, November 1, 2012 - The defining moment of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) Annual Convention in Salt Lake City in October was the "Big Reveal" of the new AMSN PRISM Award™, the first of its kind that recognizes outstanding medical-surgical units across the United States.

"This award is a huge leap forward for the medical-surgical nursing specialty," said AMSN President Kathy Lattavo, MSN, RN, CMSRN. "We now have a landmark goal for nursing units to achieve, and based on everyone's reaction, the nurses are already motivated to win the award for their facility."

The award, which was unveiled during the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, October 4, spotlights units that have demonstrated exemplary nursing practice, leadership, and outcomes. The award is co-sponsored by AMSN and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB), an affiliate organization that certifies med-surg nurses. The word "PRISM" stands for "Premier Recognition In the Specialty of Med-Surg" and was chosen because it represents the many facets of skills and knowledge that medical-surgical nurses need to serve their patients.

The convention drew more than 750 nurses who listened to the country's leading experts and earned continuing nursing education (CNE). Attendees also enjoyed networking, exhibits, and special events.

Other highlights included Opening Address speaker Liz Jazwiec, RN, who inspired attendees with her session on how nurses can infuse positivity into their work culture. Marlene Kramer, PhD, RN, FAAN, delivered the convention Keynote Address on workplace advocacy. (This Keynote Address will be available at no charge to registered convention attendees through the AMSN Online Library.) Both sessions focused on one of the convention's running themes: how nurses can take action to achieve healthy practice environments.

Also during the convention, AMSN distributed over $33,000 in scholarships, grants, and awards as part of an ongoing effort to support members in research and practice.
